Before you begin, make sure you've got the following tools to hand:

  • Disposable gloves, to protect your hands from staining.
  • A tint brush, for precision application.
  • Petroleum jelly, to protect against drips and stains.
  • An old towel to protect your clothing.
  • A comb, to detangle your hair and work the dye through.
  • Sectioning clips to help you to segment your hair neatly.

READY TO GET YOUR DYE ON?

  1. To begin, section your hair and comb through, to ensure your locks are smooth and tangle free. Starting from the front of your hair, begin  the dyeing process with Sunshine and apply the colour to the middle section of your hair, using a tint brush. Aim to cover around 2 inches of hair in this shade.
  2. Next, apply Rock 'n Roll Red to the uppermost section of hair, stopping when you reach the yellow section. To avoid harsh lines, gently blend the two colours together to mask any obvious divisions.
  3. Now, for the pink! Apply around 2 inches of Hot Hot Pink directly underneath the yellow section, using your fingers to softly blend the two colours together.
  4. Using Electric Tiger Lily, paint on a band of opulent orange straight underneath the pink panel. As before, softly mix the colours with your fingers to ensure a gradient look.
  5. Next, apply around 2 inches of Purple Haze to your locks.
  6. Now, it's time to go for green! Using Electric Lizard, cover another 2 inches, making sure you blend carefully.
  7. To complete the rainbow, apply Rockabilly Blue to the last few inches of your hair.
  8. Once the colours have fully developed, begin to carefully wash out the dye, making sure you wear gloves throughout. An easy way to do this is to section the hair, then hold the hair flat under cool running water until all dye is removed and the water runs clear. This technique minimises the risk of colours bleeding or blending into one another.
  9. Once your hair is fresh, clean and dye free, dry and style as normal.

RAINBOW TIPS

Wanna start living life in glorious technicolour? Want a look that'll make people stop and stare? Why not try rainbow tips?

Fancy giving it a go? Before you begin, you'll need the following equipment:

  • Small hair elastics, preferably the 'no-snag' style.
  • Disposable gloves to protect your hands from staining.
  • A tint brush for precision application.
  • An old towel to protect your clothing
  • Petroleum jelly, to protect against drips and stains.
  • An old towel to protect your clothing.
  • comb, to detangle your hair and work the dye through.
  • Sectioning clips to help you to segment your hair neatly.

READY? STEADY? RAINBOW!

Thoroughly detangle your hair and begin to section off into small ponytails, tied with hair elastics.

  1. Starting with a darker base colour? Then we recommend that you pre-lighten the ends of each ponytail with Manic Panic Flashlightning and wrap them with foil to aid development. Follow the instructions on the lightener packaging and allow the bleach to process until each ponytail tip is a light blonde shade. If you're starting with a blonde or light base, you may be able to skip this step.
  2. Without removing the hair elastics, rinse out each ponytail separately with warm water and wash with a mild and gentle shampoo.
  3. Towel or blow dry each ponytail, as the dye must be applied to dry hair.
  4. Now for the fun bit! Choose a mixture of different Manic Panic Hair Colours (we recommend Electric Banana, Cotton Candy Pink, Shocking Blue, Electric Lizard, Pillarbox Red and Ultra Violet) to dye each hair tip a different colour for a rainbow effect.
  5. Wearing gloves and using a tint brush, use each colour on the ponytail tips. Do not apply colour above the hair elastics!
  6. Isolate each hair section to avoid the colours bleeding into one another, if you wish, you can wrap a small amount of cling film around each section.
  7. Allow to process for at least 1 hour, or until the dye has dried.
  8. Rinse out each ponytail individually with cool water until the water runs clear, then dry and style as normal!
