Snake Bites 101

The snake bite piercing got its name because of its appearance resembling the fangs of a snake. The unique location of this piercing makes it a popular choice for males and females who want to create an individual look.

The area is sterilised and entry points are made with a pen first to ensure a precise and symmetrical look. Exit points are not made because we don't encourage customers to ingest the ink.

The lip is clamped, though not pulled taut, as the clamps are used in this case only to reduce the pain of the piercing.  A small, hollow needle is used to make the hole and then thread the jewellery through the skin.

It is recommended by most professionals that studs are used for the initial stage, at least until the healing process has finished; they can be changed for hoops, rings and spikes at a later stage. It is not always wise to get both sides of the snake bite piercing done in one sitting as the mouth will be incredibly swollen and it will be difficult to eat and talk.

The lips can be a sensitive area and two piercings are being done at the same time to create snake bites. However, it's important to remember that pain is entirely subjective and so it really depends on your personal pain threshold. As with any piercing, there may be some bruising or soreness for a few days but this shouldn't last long.

Aftercare for a snake bite piercing can be a bit more complicated due to it being both an external and internal oral piercing.

Because of the swelling, eating and drinking will be difficult for several days after the piercing, and it is imperative that they are kept clean both inside and out. Brushing your teeth with a soft-bristled toothbrush several times a day, as well as using mouthwash after eating, is recommended until it has completely healed.

You must also clean the skin around your snake bite piercing with a saline solution twice a day.

Labret studs and ball closure rings look wicked on this type of piercing and hoops of the right size can also be worn. You can find a wide range of colours and styles at Blue Banana so have a browse through our snake bite jewellery to see what might work well for you!
