Ear Lobe Piercing 101

Ear lobe piercings have been popular for many years now, with the majority of women having them done at an early age, and many men too.

Like many piercings, this body modification dates back to ancient times with some of the earliest evidence of men wearing ear piercings was found in the archaeological evidence of Persepolis in Ancient Persia. There is also a reference to ear piercing in the Bible in Exodus 32: 1-4 where Aaron the priest requests people to bring him the earrings of their sons and daughters.

It wasn't until the late 1950's and early 1960's that jewellery stores and department stores began offering ear piercing services for the public. This was after people started performing them at home with 'ear piercing parties' where girls would pierce each other's ears. This is not recommended because of the hugely increased risk of damage to the ear and infection so we would always insist upon going to a reputable piercing studio for your ear lobe piercing.

The biggest selling point of ear lobe piercings is the hugely versatile range of different jewellery options available, which are detailed later in this guide.

The procedure for ear lobe piercings can differ slightly depending on the piercer/store. Here is an indication of what you can expect:
  • The piercer will clean the ear using a disinfectant wipe or spray, then mark the intended placement of the piercing with a marker pen
  • The piercer will usually ask you to confirm the placement in a mirror before beginning. If they don't prompt you, feel free to ask to check them before the piercing goes ahead
  • The piercer will then use either a specially designed piercing gun or a sterilized piercing needle to pierce the ear lobe. If you are having both ear lobes pierced they will pierce one at a time.
  • If the piercer uses a needle, they will manually place your earring into the hole, whereas the ear lobe piercing guns will automatically thread the jewellery through during the piercing process
  • The piercer will then secure the back of the earring to keep your jewellery in place and the piercing is complete

Another reason why ear lobe piercings are highly popular, even with children, is that they are usually the least painful piercings to have. The fleshy nature of the lobe along with only a small amount of nerve endings in that part of the ear means that people tend to tolerate this piercing pain very well.

However, if you really can't bear the thought of having your ear lobes pierced, you can still wear ear lobe jewellery, as there are several clip on earrings available on the market.

Ear lobe piercings generally heal very well, within approximately 6-8 weeks provided the correct aftercare procedure is followed. However you will need to wait a little longer for the hole to completely heal, allowing you to remove your earrings without the holes closing over.

Here are a few tips to help the healing process:
  • Clean the piercing site twice a day with salt water solution (try using cotton buds or pads)
  • Do NOT twist/rotate/fiddle with the earrings at all during the healing process
  • Keep an eye on the back of the earring and make sure it fits well. Having the back tight against your ear during swelling will increase the risk of embedding but having the back too loose could mean it will fall off and the jewellery will come out.
  • Make sure your hands are clean and dry before touching your piercing
  • Do not remove/try to change your jewellery until it is fully healed
A small amount of redness, swelling and soreness is normal during the first couple of days after a piercing; however if your ear is persistently swollen, painful, hot or secreting any discharge, please return to your piercer for assessment.

Ear lobe piercings are definitely one of the most versatile piercings, with a wealth of different jewellery style and options to choose from. Whether you want statement drop earrings that are long enough to brush your shoulders, or simple jewelled studs that you can wear everyday, there are so many earrings to choose from you'll be spoiled for choice.
