One of the less common cartilage piercings
, the Snug piercing
is a great option for those looking to get a something that's a little different.
Sometimes referred to as the Anti-helix due to it's placement opposite the helix site, the Snug piercing is placed through the defined part of cartilage along the inner ear. What makes this piercing even more interesting is that not everybody is eligible as this depends entirely on the anatomy of your ear cartilage.
If you're looking to get this piercing done, we recommend visiting a piercer beforehand to get an assessment of the ear and find out if it will fit well. If you aren't a good candidate for the piercing, you can always get a 'Faux Snug' which consists of a Conch piercing and a lower Helix piercing; this will give the same appearance as the Snug but with two different pieces of jewellery.
Though this piercing looks great with its stand-out look and tons of different jewellery options available, it is important to note that it is one of the longer healing piercings and will require commitment to keep clean and in good health. Therefore it is important to fully consider this piercing before getting it done.
The Snug piercing is placed in a very sensitive area of the ear and, as with any piercing, it is crucial to visit an experienced piercer and reputable studio to ensure you receive the best piercing experience and lessen the risk of infection or healing difficulties.
The Snug piercing
is one of the slightly more painful ear piercings, simply due to the thickness of the area of cartilage the piercer must pass through. However, the majority of customers report more of a pressure feeling than a pain and this piercing is also over very quickly.
The main consideration for a Snug piercing pain wise is the soreness you will experience after the piercing. This should never be unbearable and should only last for a short amount of time, however you may experience discomfort if you attempt to lie on the ear or catch it on anything.
The pain experienced with a Snug piercing will vary greatly between individuals but if you really love the look of this funky cartilage piercing, it's well worth the few minutes of discomfort!
As mentioned, a Snug piercing often has a longer healing period than other ear piercings, because of the thickness of the cartilage that is pierced. Though it may take between 3-6 months to heal, there are plenty of tips you can use to ensure a smooth and pain-free healing process, keeping your piercing looking and feeling awesome.
- Use cotton balls/gauze pads with a salt water solution to soak your piercing twice a day during initial healing
- Rinse your piercing with very mild soap and warm water when you shower
- Dry your piercing with a disposable paper towel after cleaning
- Avoid sleeping on the piercing until fully healed
- Avoid using earbuds or wearing earphones until the piercing has fully healed
- NEVER use any makeup, oils or creams on the piercing site
- Avoid swimming/hot tubs during initial healing
- Make sure your hands are clean and dry before cleaning your piercing
- Do not fiddle with or rotate your piercing
- Do not try to change your jewellery until the piercing is FULLY healed and consult a piercer if you require assistance in choosing or changing jewellery
Whilst a small amount of swelling, soreness and clear discharge is all completely normal in the early healing stages, these are the symptoms that could point to infection/migration:
- Constant pain/soreness
- Noticeable irritation
- Prolonged redness/swelling
- Seeping discharge that is coloured or foul-smelling
If either of these conditions are not treated, it may result in your jewellery growing out and leaving nasty scarring. If you have any excessive pain or symptoms, please consult a professional piercer for an assessment.
