Auricle Piercing 101

Auricle piercing is done in the outer part of the ear which is called the auricle, between the helix and the earlobe. It has become one of the most fashionable ear piercing options due to its outward location which is great for flaunting fancy body jewellery.

Procedure

To get this cool new look and accentuate your ears, the piercer typically uses a sterilised gauge needle and passes it through the auricle by inserting the jewellery in the process.

The piercing spot is cleaned thoroughly and marked with a pen first so you can agree that you are happy with the location. It is a relatively simple procedure compared to some other piercing options.

Pain

The auricle piercing goes through the cartilage so it may feel slightly more painful than other ear piercings. However, it really depends on your personal pain threshold and any soreness or swelling should disappear within a week or two.

Healing

As it is a cartilage piercing it might take longer to heal than your average ear piercing. Usually, this type of piercing takes between 3 and 9 months to heal. To ensure that your piercing heals as quickly as possible, itís advisable that you choose your jewellery carefully and make sure it's good quality.

Getting the cartilage to heal totally after an auricle piercing does take time and patience but it's all worth it when you get the chance to show off some stunning jewellery.

To aid the healing process, follow these simple steps:
  • Clean the area with a salt water solution and lukewarm water every day
  • Avoid using soap or other cosmetics in the piercing area
  • Try not to sleep on the pierced side
  • Don't move or rotate the jewellery
  • Change your pillow cases regularly
Once the healing process is complete, you can have fun experimenting with a range of jewellery styles!

Jewellery

Jewellery such as ball closure rings look fantastic but may catch on things, and therefore may not be the best choice for the first year of having your auricle piercing. Labrets and barbells also look gorgeous in an auricle piercing, so these might be your best best to begin with.
