Do Daith Piercings Cure Migraines?

If someone told you there was a cure for migraines and it was as simple as an ear piercing, we bet most would be really excited to try it. I mean, why not? Migraines are a bane on thousands of people every day. Plus, piercings look awesome.

Recently the humble daith piercing has been touted as a miracle relief for migraines based on anecdotal evidence from sufferers who took the plunge, shared online and by word of mouth.

But does a daith piercing really work as a cure for migraines? We take a look at how and why the daith piercing could be the solution to your headache troubles.

A Miracle Cure For Migraines?

Daith piercings are a type of ear piercing that goes through the innermost cartilage fold of the ear. Jewellery worn in a daith piercing is typically a ring or bar and tends to be very popular with young women. However, their popularity has increased significantly due to claims they’re able to help cure migraines.

Migraine sufferingWord has spread online quickly of this ‘miracle cure’ for migraines. Migraine sufferers have said how after having had their daith pierced their painful headaches have noticeably subsided, sometimes by up to as much as 50% for a single piercing.

One of the first people to confidently put forward the theory that a daith piercing could alleviate the pain of migraines was Nicole Bandes, a managing director from Arizona in the US.

In a Facebook post, the long term migraine sufferer said, “I’ve now had this for over 6 months and can honestly admit that is has worked for me. I’ve seen a reduction in frequency and intensity of my migraines where nothing else seemed to help. Since getting it, I think I’ve had less than 5 migraines.”

Many other people like Nicole have shared similar stories, including within our own stores. Many Blue Banana customers who have got their daith pierced, with the intention of trying to cure their headaches, have told us that shortly afterwards their migraines subsided slightly.

How Is It Supposed To Work?

So how does the piercing work to reduce the pain of migraines? The answer may be related to acupuncture.

In acupuncture, long fine needles are inserted into “pressure points” on the body to relieve pain by triggering nerve endings to release the natural feel good hormones, endorphins. It is thought that the pressure point for main_daith_piercing_20130104headache relief is situated in the same location as where a daith piercing is placed. This may explain why many claim their migraines seem to be less intense after a daith piercing.

It’s not known 100% for certain why daith piercings have been helping people with their migraines, as the theory has not been scientifically tested yet, but the increase in positive feedback from those having the piecing done suggests that there is some weight behind it.

So, Should I Get A Daith Piercing For My Migraines?

With a growing number of customers telling us that having their daith pierced has helped massively with their migraines, it’s fair to say its most definitely worth a try if you’re a migraine sufferer. Some people have even remarked at how having both ears pierced can reduce the frequency of migraines by twice as much as having a single daith done.

However, we must say that having a daith pierced may not work for everyone, as every person is different, and in the case where a daith piercing does not work to reduce your suffering, we suggest you seek another form of treatment. Plus, even if it doesn’t work, you still get a fabulous new piercing to appreciate!
