At Blue Banana we’re always looking for the latest underground trends in piercing and the hottest one on the market right now has got to be the Smiley piercing!

What Is A Smiley Piercing?

The Smiley piercing, also known as an upper lip frenulum piercing, is a piercing that passes through the upper lip frenulum (the webbing that joins your top lip to your gums). This delicate piercing is usually done with a horseshoe barbell or a captive bead ring and is designed to show the balls of your jewellery when you smile!

Does It Hurt?

A Smiley piercing is considered to be fairly low on the pain scale due to the fact that it is such a thin piece of skin to pierce and is over very quickly.

Most customers describe the experience as less painful than they had imagined and much quicker. Once the area has been wiped clean and the piercer has secured the clamp, the actual Smiley piercing will take seconds.

How Much Does It Cost?

In our studios, a Smiley piercing starts at 25.0. and will vary depending on what jewellery you choose. This price may be different depending on which of our 1. piercing studios you visit, so we recommend double checking with the studio you intend to use. Use our store locator to find out how much a smiley could cost in your local Blue Banana.

How Long Will It Take To Heal?

The Smiley piercing healing rates vary depending on your individual response, however, the average time frame is anywhere between 2-3 months. During this time, as well as following your piercer’s aftercare instructions, it’s important to take certain precautions to ensure your piercing heals correctly:

  • Always wash your hands with antibacterial soap before touching the piercing
  • Avoid spicy foods for the first few days
  • Be careful when brushing or flossing your teeth
  • Don’t attempt to change your jewellery until your piercing is fully healed
  • Use alcohol free mouthwash

Will It Grow Out?

One of the biggest concerns people have about Smiley piercings is that they will grow out. Unfortunately, as with any piercing, there is a risk of migration and with the Smiley piercing the fact that it goes through such a thin area of skin does increase the risk.

However, you can ask your piercer to check how well your lip frenulum will tolerate the piercing based on how big it is. The stronger and larger the webbing is, the less chance there is of the piercing growing out.

So if you fancy sprucing up your smile with some cool new jewellery, the Smiley piercing is a great option for you. Simply pop into one of our piercing studios to find out more!
