Surface Piercing Procedure
Due to their intriguing nature and their difference to standard body piercing, surface piercings have become increasingly popular.

Looking for somewhere to get your own surface piercing? Use our store locator to find your local Blue Banana Studio. You don’t need to book an appointment; you can simply show up and be pierced on the day.

Please ensure that you have checked the surface piercing age restriction before coming to store. It can help to avoid any undue disappointment. In a Blue Banana studio, the surface piercing age restriction is 18 (ID may be required) or 16 with parental consent from a parent or guardian who is present.

Once you’re all booked in, you will have some forms to fill out. A member of Blue Banana staff will walk you through the steps and can help you pick out jewellery. Then you can meet the piercer! They too will give you a quick consultation and briefing before discussing the surface piercing location.

The piercer typically uses a sterilised gauge needle and passes it through the skin, inserting the jewellery in the process. The piercing spot is cleaned thoroughly and marked with a pen first so you can agree that you are happy with the location.

Surface Piercing Aftercare Advice

Generally, there are two types of surface piercing. One type uses a barbell which passes underneath the skin. The other type is a microdermal piercing which uses an anchor, placed beneath the skin, to screw a small gem into that is visible above the surface of the skin. Both types require different aftercare so make sure to read the information for your specific piercing for more details.

A barbell surface piercing will need to be cleaned twice a day using a saltwater solution. Use a cotton pad to gently clean the piercing area. You can also use Tea Tree Oil. Simply soak the area 5 minutes prior to using your saltwater solution. Then wipe the Tea Tree Oil away with the saltwater.

When you get your microdermal piercing, your piercer will cover it with a surgical dressing. You will need to leave the piercing covered for 48 hours. After 48 hours, remove the dressing and leave it without for an hour. Clean with saltwater solution then reapply a fresh dressing. Continue this routine for 4-5 days. After one week, leave the piercing without a dressing but continue to clean it with saltwater at least once a day for 6 weeks.
