Picking Out Earring Studs & Rings
It is important to choose the right size and material for your piercing jewellery as your body may react differently to different materials. Getting the right size of earring stud or hoop is important for the health of your piercing.

  • Size: Earring studs and rings are measured by the length and gauge. The first number is the gauge (displayed in mm) and the second (where applicable) is the length or diameter e.g. 1.0 x 8mm. When buying earrings, it is important that the post gauge matches your piercing.
  • Material: Choosing a high quality material such as titanium will provide you with a hypoallergenic material that is perfect for everyday use. Surgical steel is also a good choice for healed piercings as it is durable.

Inserting/Removing Earrings Studs & Hoops
Before handling your piercing, always make sure to wash your hands with antibacterial soap.

Changing an earring stud or hoop is a simple process that can be done at home but if you would like help, especially the first time, then it is best to visit a piercer.

It is important to be patient and not attempt to change your piercing jewellery before the wound is fully healed as this can cause complications. However, once it has healed you can start exploring your options. Lobe piercings have one of the quickest healing times so you won’t have to wait long before trying other piercing jewellery.

To remove your earring stud, simply remove the back of the earring and gently pull the earring out of your piercing from the front. Most earrings jewelry fastens with butterfly clips or similar styles which simply slide off the bar. However, some styles may have a back that needs to be unscrewed.

Hoop jewellery has a variety of fastenings. You may have a hinged section that can be undone to remove the jewellery. This will usually either be placed into a small clasp or inside the hoop.

Earrings such as drop earrings usually have a hook post which can be worked through the piercing hole to remove the jewellery.

Where can you use earring studs?
Earring studs are specifically designed for use in ear piercings. Some people try to use earrings in other piercings but they are best suited to standard lobe piercings. You can also wear hoops, huggies, and hoop earrings in your lobe piercing. Some people opt for piercing jewellery such as BCRs and labrets in their lobe piercings – just make sure to check that the gauge of the jewellery matches your lobe piercing. Lobes tend to be piercing with a smaller hole compared to ear cartilage piercings.
