It depends on your piercing. Earlobes heal the fastest, usually in around 3 months. However, cartilage and other facial piercings can take 4 to 6 months to heal, and body piercings can take up to 18 months, so make sure to be informed before getting your piercing, as you're committing to a potentially long aftercare period. You'll need to clean your piercing twice a day for the entire healing duration. To clean your piercing, ensure that your hands are clean, and then use a saline solution to rinse off your piercing. You can use a cotton bud or pad to clean around the piercing, but make sure not to rub up against the piercing too much. Pat your piercing dry, and ensure that your piercing is in place and secure. Ear piercings can be cleaned with saline solution as described above. We recommend cleaning cartilage piercings twice a day for at least 10 weeks and lobe piercings for 6 weeks.

Nose piercings can be cleaned with saline solution as described above. We recommend cleaning any internal areas, such as the nostrils, twice a day for 6 weeks and externally for 8 weeks.

Oral piercings can be cleaned with saline solution too, but instead of cleaning around the area, we recommend rinsing the inside of the mouth with the solution and then spitting it out. We recommend doing this twice a day for 4 to 6 weeks. The jewellery in your new lip or tongue piercing will probably look or feel too big to accommodate the swelling you will almost certainly experience. Swelling can be uncomfortable, but it will slowly decrease over time, which usually takes between 2 to 4 weeks. After 2 weeks, we recommend you return to the store so a piercer can assess you for a possible jewellery change.

Body piercings can be cleaned with saline solution just like facial piercings. We recommend cleaning your body piercings twice a day for the entire healing period.

You can change your piercing jewellery any time after the piercing has fully healed. If you're not sure whether the piercing has fully healed or not, it's always better to err on the safe side and wait a bit longer. Once you're ready, simply remove the old piercing jewellery with clean hands and insert the new one. Take your time and be gentle with your new piercing. With any new piercing, a local area of redness and a small amount of white/yellowish discharge is completely normal. If you experience more painful swelling, spread over a bigger area or accompanied by other symptoms of infection, you should return to the store and/or consult your GP. Migration is caused when the body rejects the foreign object and tries to push it out. It is more likely that piercing migration will occur with surface piercings such as those in the navel, eyebrow, and nape. If your piercing is migrating towards the surface of your skin, it is important to take action to prevent scarring. Find out how to troubleshoot your piercing migration here. Once the migration period has started, the only options are to leave it alone or remove the body jewellery. If the jewellery is removed, piercing migration is stopped, and the hole is allowed to close up completely so there may be less scarring. If you are not sure about what to do if your piercing is migrating, then talk to your piercer for advice.

Piercing rejection happens when the piercing migrates all the way out of the skin- your body is literally rejecting it. As we said above, piercing migration and rejection happen more often with shallower body piercings like surface piercings. Find out how to troubleshoot piercing rejection here. If you notice that your piercing is being rejected, the best thing to do is to ask your piercer to remove it completely, so that you can treat the skin and prevent scarring. Once your skin has healed, you can always attempt to pierce the skin again.

NEVER twist or rotate your jewellery, as this can lead to irritation. NEVER touch your piercing with unwashed hands. NEVER use harsh antibacterial chemicals like alcohol-based cleaning products on your piercing, as this can lead to irritation.
