Acrylic jewellery is usually worn in healed piercings as a metal-free piercing jewellery alternative but piercers will sometimes recommend trying acrylic jewellery if you are experiencing problems with your new piercing.
At Blue Banana, there are plenty of options available when it comes to acrylic jewellery including acrylic earrings for stretched lobes, navel bars, and piercing add ons which can be screwed onto many types of barbell and labret.
We also offer a range of retainer jewellery which is flexible and clear making it perfect for hiding piercings, wearing during sport, or wearing during medical procedures.
One of the reasons acrylic piercing jewellery is recommended for wearing during sport is that it is flexible so if your piercing is knocked or pushed it is more likely that the piercing jewellery will bend rather than embed into the piercing hole and cause damage.
Is acrylic good for piercings?
Acrylic jewellery can be helpful when you are having trouble getting a piercing to heal with metal jewellery as it is less reactive than other piercing materials. While it is advisable to try and wear high-quality metal jewellery when you have just had a piercing, acrylic jewellery does have its benefits. As it is flexible plastic, acrylic jewellery will reduce the pressure on the piercing, and very few people ever report having an allergic reaction to this material.
Some people prefer to wear acrylic piercing jewellery in their healed tongue and lip piercings. This is because acrylic is far less likely to cause damage to the teeth. When metal jewellery rubs against a tooth it can wear away the enamel, plus accidentally knocking your teeth with your piercing jewellery can cause chipping. Acrylic is softer and more flexible so even if it is pushed against a tooth it is more likely to simply bend than cause damage.
Another benefit of choosing acrylic jewellery for your healed piercings is that it is usually cheaper than a metal piece of jewellery. This cheap plastic is kind to skin and kind to your bank balance too.
Is acrylic bad for piercings?
While acrylic is a useful piercing material it is not a metal which means acrylic jewellery doesn’t have the ability to withstand hot temperatures. It cannot be sterilised in the same way as titanium or other metal piercings. This is why it is not advisable to wear acrylic in a healing piercing unless advised to do so by your piercer.
Acrylic Ear Stretching Jewellery
The smooth nature of this lightweight material has seen acrylic jewellery gain popularity as a method for stretching ear piercings. At Blue Banana, you will be able to find a wide range of tapers, plugs, and tunnels made from acrylic which will help you with the stretching process. Acrylic tapers, in particular, are ideal for giving your piercing a slow stretch while keeping you comfortable.
