A Steampunk Top Hat or A Steampunk Bowler Hat? It’s A Tough Call!
The top hat also known as a topper is a tall, flat-crowned and broad brimmed hat that was worn by men from the 18th to the middle of the 20th century. After World War II the topper had become a rarity in ordinary fashion, though it continued to be worn in specific circumstances. Steampunk top hats are now one of the most popular head wear choices for the sub culture.
Bowler hats, also known as derby hats are made from hard felt and have a rounded crown. These hats were originally created for the British soldier and politician Edward Coke. The bowler was immensely popular among the working class during the Victorian era and later it was adopted by the upper and middle classes in the UK too.
Steampunk fashion is brilliantly versatile so you don’t need to be intimidated by the high society look of the steampunk top hat or the working class roots of the bowler hat. It doesn’t matter if you’re a greasy steampunk mechanic, airship pirate or an aristocrat; any steampunk hat can work, you just wear it like you mean it.
You’ll find something to suit your style, whether you're into steampunk cosplay, fancy dress, or are a fully fledged member of the subculture; a true steampunk.
