What are different types of earrings called?
There are many different types of earrings. Some are more common than others. Here are some of the most popular earring types:
- Stud Earrings
- Hoop Earrings
- Hook or Drop Earrings
- Huggie Earrings
- Crawler Earrings
What are the most popular earrings?
While it is down to personal preference as to which type of earrings you like to wear, these are the most popular earrings:
- Stud Earrings with a small gem
- Hoop Earrings
- Drop Earrings
- Huggie Earrings
- Crawler Earrings
Crawler earrings have become an increasingly popular type of earring. These earrings are designed to look as if they are crawling up your ear but are fastened using a regular earring post. While it is difficult to say what the most popular earrings are, the crawler earrings are certainly becoming a new frontrunner.
What is a stud earring?
A stud earring features a straight post that is inserted through the lobe piercing with an adornment on one end. Types of stud earrings include embellishments such as gems or other types of decoration. The stud earring usually has small grooves at the other end of the post to help keep the fastening in place. The stud earring can be fastened in a number of ways but the most common type is with a butterfly clip.
What are Huggies earrings?
Huggie earrings are a type of hoop earring for lobe piercings that is designed to sit closely against the ear. The difference between huggies and sleeper earrings is that huggies earrings tend to be thicker. They are usually fastened using a hinged segment that clicks into place on the earrings hoops. This is just one of the types of ring jewellery that can be worn in lobe piercings.
What are sleeper earrings?
Sleeper earrings are usually the type of earring that you will have your lobes pierced with. This is because they are designed to be comfortable and are for wearing all the time while your earrings piercing heals. As the name suggests you can sleep in sleeper earrings. They are usually smooth and sit close to the lobe for maximum comfort.
Is it ok to wear hoop earrings to bed?
It is ok to wear hoop earrings to bed as long as they are small and sit snugly to the ear lobe. Sleeper earrings are specifically designed for wearing at night. You will need to wear earrings to bed when you first have your ears pierced, but once they have healed many people opt not to wear earrings overnight. If you do prefer to wear earrings to bed make sure not to wear styles that could get caught such as large hoop earrings or drop earrings.
What is a good price for earrings?
The price of your earrings will depend on the material that they are made of; therefore, defining a good price depends on what you are looking for. A standard pair of surgical steel earrings can be as cheap as £1.99 while a pair of silver or gold earrings is naturally much more expensive. Make sure to choose a material that suits your needs, for example, you may need a hypoallergenic material such as polished titanium which can cost between £3 and £6. Often you will find that the adornment on the earring is the expensive element. For example, a cubic zirconia gem will be much cheaper than a diamond.
Is it safe to wear cheap earrings?
It is usually best not to wear cheap jewelry earrings as the material may not be safe for your piercing. The key when checking the safety of earrings is to look at the material they are made from. Surgical steel, titanium, silver, and gold are all suitable for wearing in lobe piercings. Wearing cheap earrings made from other materials can cause your piercing to turn black or grey. This is a tell-tale sign of unsafe earrings that can cause irritation to the skin.
What’s the difference between studs and earrings?
Earrings can describe multiple types of ear lobe jewellery. The difference is that earring studs describe one type of earring. A stud features a straight post that can be fastened at the back with a small gem or decoration on the front. You can choose between a range of earrings including huggies, sleepers, hoops, and studs to wear in your healed lobe piercing. Most people will initially wear stud earrings or sleepers while their piercing is healing. When it comes to choosing between post earrings vs stud make sure to select whichever feels most comfortable to you.

Picking Out Earring Studs & Rings
It is important to choose the right size and material for your piercing jewellery as your body may react differently to different materials. Getting the right size of earring stud or hoop is important for the health of your piercing.
- Size: Earring studs and rings are measured by the length and gauge. The first number is the gauge (displayed in mm) and the second (where applicable) is the length or diameter e.g. 1.0 x 8mm. When buying earrings, it is important that the post gauge matches your piercing.
- Material: Choosing a high quality material such as titanium will provide you with a hypoallergenic material that is perfect for everyday use. Surgical steel is also a good choice for healed piercings as it is durable.
Inserting/Removing Earrings Studs & Hoops
Before handling your piercing, always make sure to wash your hands with antibacterial soap.
Changing an earring stud or hoop is a simple process that can be done at home but if you would like help, especially the first time, then it is best to visit a piercer.
It is important to be patient and not attempt to change your piercing jewellery before the wound is fully healed as this can cause complications. However, once it has healed you can start exploring your options. Lobe piercings have one of the quickest healing times so you won’t have to wait long before trying other piercing jewellery.
To remove your earring stud, simply remove the back of the earring and gently pull the earring out of your piercing from the front. Most earrings jewelry fastens with butterfly clips or similar styles which simply slide off the bar. However, some styles may have a back that needs to be unscrewed.
Hoop jewellery has a variety of fastenings. You may have a hinged section that can be undone to remove the jewellery. This will usually either be placed into a small clasp or inside the hoop.
Earrings such as drop earrings usually have a hook post which can be worked through the piercing hole to remove the jewellery.
Where can you use earring studs?
Earring studs are specifically designed for use in ear piercings. Some people try to use earrings in other piercings but they are best suited to standard lobe piercings. You can also wear hoops, huggies, and hoop earrings in your lobe piercing. Some people opt for piercing jewellery such as BCRs and labrets in their lobe piercings – just make sure to check that the gauge of the jewellery matches your lobe piercing. Lobes tend to be piercing with a smaller hole compared to ear cartilage piercings.
