Wireless Festival
Queen Elizabeth Olympic Park, London12th July 2013
Wireless Festival History
A top music festival which takes place annually, the Wireless festival is not one to be reckoned with. Sourcing the best bands and acts in music, Wireless never fails to please its music hungry attendees. In the hands of Live Nation, this festival first took place in Hyde Park, moving to Harewood Park, in Leeds for 2006 and 2007, before returning to its birth place in London.
Set in a prime location, the event hosts most of today’s best artists and bands, in pop, rock and even dance. Spread across numerous stages, it won’t be hard for you to scout out a band of your requirements here. First sponsored by O2, it was originally known as the O2 Wireless festival but has since changed its name from 2009 to the Wireless festival, due to the new sponsors. With all the facilities you will need and entertainment to keep you enthralled, the Wireless festival is a music event not to be missed.
The Wireless festival began in 2005 and was originally sponsored by O2. There were a good amount of acts performing with some amazing sets, all providing the festival with a fantastic review. Some of the first years’ highlights were; Basement Jaxx, Moby, Hard-Fi, New Order, Lady Sovereign, Keane, James Blunt, Pete Doherty and Kasabian. This is evidence enough to prove that the Wireless festival has attracted a large range of fantastic artists from its’ very first year.
In 2006 the festival occurred at Hyde Park and also at Harewood House in Leeds. This was the perfect way for the festival to grow in popularity and allowed so many more people to attend. Some of the highlights and headliners were; The Strokes, Gogol Bordello, Dirty Pretty Things, David Gray, KT Tunstall, Massive Attack, Gnarls Barkley, Metric, James Blunt, Paolo Nutini, Goldfrapp and The Fratellis.
Again in 2007 the festival occurred in both locations and Leeds also introduced the option of camping in Lord Harewoods’ grounds for an additional cost. Some highlights were; The White Stripes, Queens of the Stone Age, Klaxons, Daft Punk, The Cribs, Kate Nash, Kaiser Chiefs and Faithless.
In 2008 the Wirless festival returned to its’ birthplace and this was the last year of the O2’s reign. Some of the acts to perform at this festival were; Jay-Z, Mark Ronson, Elliot Minor, Tinie Tempah, Morrissey, The Courteeners, Deadmau5, Fatboy Slim, Robyn, Counting Crows, Bowling for Soup and Goo Goo Dolls.
In 2009 the festival introduced new sponsors, Barclaycard and saw a reduction in the duration of the festival. It was now a 2 day festival instead of four and takes place in Hyde Park, like the original. Finally, in 2010 it was increased to a three day festival and that is how it will remain.
Some of the 2010 highlights were as follows; P!NK, Alphabeat, The Ting Tings, Gossip, Plan B, Daisy Dares You, LCD Sound System, Snoop Dogg, Missy Elliot, Jay-Z, Lily Allen, Slash and Professor Green. The Wireless line up for 2011 was one of the best of the festival season, playing host to acts like Black Eyed Peas, Chase & Status, Tinie Tempah, Plan B, PULP, The Chemical Brothers, Bruno Mars, Example and The Streets. Last years’ Wireless festival sold out immediately and so we suggest getting your tickets ASAP for the next one.
Main Stage – Where you will find the most mainstream and popular acts around, the main stage is the one you can trust. With a whole array of artists that are hip and happening at this moment in time, the main stage has seen performances from Pink to Kanye West, Dizzee Rascal to Missy Elliott. So for music you can’t afford to miss out on, make sure you check out the main stage.
Pepsi Max Stage – Sponsored by Pepsi, the Pepsi Max stage is full of recent and present DJ’s that are hotly tipped for huge, if not already, success. Where the party’s happening, you need to get your toosh in gear and head on over to this stage. Having hosted Chase and Status, Plan B and Wale in previous years, you can expect a hot bill of acts for the next fest.
Third Stage – The stage to discover new sounds, the Third stage is home to the upcoming artists of the year and allows you to prepare to love them as soon as you leave the festival. With the beats floating through the air and getting into your bloodstream, it’s hard to not let the music get the better of you. As soon as it draws you in there’s no going back; you’re hooked, but instead of fighting it off, go along with it and enjoy a diverse range of tracks from some of today's most impressive artists.
The Bandstand – With music to get you up and on your feet, the Bandstand stage is where you will proudly discover artists that are new and current. Bringing you nothing but the freshest sounds and providing your ears with a fix they won’t receive from any other stage. Having played host to indie pop musician Eliza Doolittle and talented vocalist Lizzy Pattinson, The Bandstand Stage is far from ordinary.
Professional stylists will be on board to perform treatment on your skin and you can grab a spa type therapy at the hands of the beauty experts. The TIGI team will also be hanging around to offer tips or even style advice for your hair. With their hair products on display, treat yourself and get the perfect hairstyle in the middle of the Wireless festival madness.
With your energy dropping over the course of this weekend, it’s essential that you reboot and get your levels back up to a reasonable standard by popping to the Red Bull Star Shade Bar, where their team of workers will provide you with a cool refreshment. So as well as top music bands, acts and artists, you can also enjoy the many attractions available at the Wireless festival.
Celebrating seven years of fantastic festivals and buzzing with the build up to 2013, the Wireless festival is one of those things that you just have to experience for yourself. Make the most of what’s on offer throughout the entire weekend and around the whole festival site, as you’ll never run out of new things to do.
