Street Ballet Skirts, Tutus & Shorts

All ballet skirts are designed to bring that overall effect to a performance; this is why you see dancers usually wearing ballet tutus. Even though skirts are the most popularly known wear for dancers, some also wear ballet shorts but these are predominantly for rehearsal use. Especially when it comes to professionals, tutus and skirts are the perfect accessories. These give that desired image to a ballet dancer and provide them with that extra oomph for their performance. The thing about ballet tutus, like all costumes, is they may restrict movement, but now suppliers usually make ballet skirts with elasticated waists to ensure they don’t restrict performers.

Even used as a costume now, ballet tutus are one of the most popular costume designs and there’s no wonder why. With the variety of styles available today, professionals always make sure they have the best for their performance. The difference between all of the ballet shorts and tutus isn’t much but it is vital in the professional industry to pick the right one. There are a variety of alternative ballet tutus used today and some of these include:
  • Romantic Tutu: The Romantic tutu has a tree quarter length size that flows freely. This is the perfect ballet tutu for large movements and they make a brilliant effect on the audience.
  • Classical Tutu:
    • Bell- This type of tutu has a stiff, flat design that makes a small bell curve at the end and is perfect for elegant performances.
    • Pancake- This is also a stiff, flat tutu but it doesn’t curve at the end and has the same effect on a performance as the bell tutu.
  • Balanchine Tutu: The Balanchine tutu is one that is short in length and has no hoops in it and fewer layers of netting.
  • Platter Tutu: This tutu is completely flat, hard and sticks out from the dancer’s waist.
All of these ballet skirts have a different impact on a performance and are used for different forms of ballet. For instance when it comes to street ballet, the ballet tutu that is most probably used is the classical tutu as it shows the movement of the dancer brilliantly. Usually ballet shorts are used in rehearsals but it is also known that ballet skirts are worn so that a dancer knows how it will feel on the stage.
