The range of street dance arm warmers on the web is forever growing as the style becomes more and more popular around the globe. First brought to our attention in the early 1980s, dance leg warmers and arm warmers were fashioned by teenage girls and became increasingly popular due to the films Flashdance and Fame. They were originally worn to bring colour to outfits and shown off with garments including leggings and jeans, but then became popular when taking part in aerobic activities. Leg warmers can change in length as some prefer to cover the thighs, while other dancers like to flaunt ankle warmers which are much smaller than the norm. With the collection of street dance leg warmers forever changing, there is now a wide range of styles on offer. Some of these include:
- Stirrup Leg These are the most common leg warmers, they are long (usually around 60cm) and feature a small hole in the back for the heel to fit into.
- Wrist Warmers The collection of wrist warmers is fairly new, however very popular. These can either feature holes for the thumbs, or simply be a loop of material which goes right over the hands.
- Wristbands These are the smallest form of arm warmers. They can be used to wipe sweat away from the forehead, and also stop sweat running onto the hands.
- No Stirrup Ankle Warmers These are similar to the stirrup leg warmers, however they dont feature a hole in the back, and simply slip right over the foot to warm the ankles.
Before arm warmers were used for street dance, they were extremely popular in the 80s. Ever since they have been worn with many professional and novice dancers all over the world, giving arm and leg warmers worldwide recognition. Originally used by classical and ballet dancers, dance leg warmers were used to keep the muscles in the legs warm, avoiding cramps and even serious injuries. When street dancing it is essential that you look fabulous and you avoid injury and this is why leg warmers have become so popular with this style of dance. When street dancing, you are always moving so straining muscles can be easy; ankle warmers prevent injury and also add unique style to your freestyle clothing.
