Gold Body Jewellery

As a material, gold body jewellery has an old tradition and is one of the earliest recorded piercing materials. Though we have discovered far better materials to make body jewellery from, the allure of gold is undeniable both as a status symbol and for its appealing aesthetics. An expensive material, no lower purity that 14 carat should be used for body jewellery and keep in mind that any cheap gold studs or piercings are likely to be gold plated. Gold plated jewellery is no good as the plating may come/rub off and leave your ear exposed to what could be a very poor quality metal.

A problem with gold body jewellery is that gold is a remarkably soft metal and is subject to scratches far more easily than titanium or surgical steel. Gold tongue bars are rare and unadvised due to the chance of people chewing on the beads. Your skin can be damaged by these scratches and results in an uneven surface that is not advised for healing piercings. Most gold piercings are actually gold alloys, mixed with other metals and in some rare cases gold/copper alloys may tarnish faster than other piecing materials.

Gold coloured titanium body jewellery is a far cheaper and safer choice for piercings, resulting in a more hardwearing range of body jewellery that still has all the lustre of gold. Titanium is also an approved piercing material for new piercings whereas gold is not. Whilst having gold piercings can be quite the status symbol, there is no practical reason to choose this inferior body jewellery material over more modern and stronger metals such as steel and titanium. Gold piercings have a long history and gold earrings were worn in particular by sailors as a way of paying for a Christian burial if they washed up onto shore and were discovered.
