A medusa piercing is often seen as a mirror reflection of the labret piercing, whereby the philtrum is pierced below the nose, allowing for body jewellery to sit in the area above the top lip. Also known as a philtrum piercing, this is both a lip piercing and an oral piercing, meaning that it requires twice as much care an attention as a cartilage or flesh piercing.

More About Medusa Piercing
The medusa piercing can be performed vertically, much like a labret piercing, and this is called a jestrum. In this case a curved barbell will be used rather than a labret and both ends will be visible above and just under the lip. A modern piercing that is growing in popularity particularly amongst young women, having a pierced philtrum is considered to enhance beauty and can be worn with a variety of labrets. Placement is important with this body modification as getting your lip pierced off-centre will accentuate any lack of symmetry you may naturally have. A medusa piercing can be stretched to an extent but you must take care that you do not stretch the flesh too far, causing a permanent hole in your upper lip, which is certain to cause irritation for yourself.
You’ll need to thoroughly cleanse the outside of your medusa piercing at least twice a day or whenever is required using a saline solution. The inside of the lip can cause irritation and due to the placement the labret body jewellery can irritate the gums. If you find that this is occurring with your piercing then you’ll need to have the body jewellery removed as any damage could be permanent. It’s worth noting that, due to the great amount a lip will swell once pierced, your initial body jewellery should be longer and larger than you’ll need later on. Once the initial swelling has gone down then you should be able to return to your piercer and have your lip piercing changed to a more comfortable size. You are also disallowed from kissing, smoking and it’s strongly advised that you avoid spicy foods that may irritate your lip. Washing your mouth with an alcohol free mouth wash after every meal will help reduce the risk of infection but lip piercings are notorious for their difficulties in healing so you should always return to the piercer you saw if you encounter any problems.
Tips For Medusa Piercing
- DO NOT smoke, drink alcohol or kiss whilst your piercing is healing. You should also take care with which foods you eat and when getting changed to ensure that you don’t accidentally irritate your piercing. Do not touch your piercing with unclean hands.
- Ensure when cleaning that you’re taking into account the internal and external sides of the piercing. You can cleanse the outside of the lip piercing with a saline solution, whilst you can help the inside heal with alcohol free mouthwash after every meal.
- Take into account that your lip will swell during the initial process so you should have a longer item of body jewellery. If your labret starts to sink into your lip then consult your piercer immediately, also contact them if your body jewellery begins to irritate your gums.
- Healing will take 5 – 10 weeks but you should maintain your cleaning regime until you feel it’s appropriate, regardless of how long you’ve had the piercing.
