Bad Taste Bears
The Bad Taste Bears phenomenon is one that has swept the world, with people in numerous countries striving to collect all of the Bad Taste Bears figurines. The first ever bear was drawn by Peter Underhill, an illustrator from Coventry, in 1994 as a way to escape from his day to day job. Over the next five years his twisted illustrations were just a way for him to unwind and enjoy himself; that was until Piranha Studios came across them and began making them into a huge success. Within the first year alone hundreds of figurines were sold and the Bad Taste Bears collectors club was launched.
From humble beginnings Bad Taste Bears have gone to experience a 10th anniversary, hundreds of Bad Taste Bears figurines and thousands upon thousands of club members. There is no way that the creator of this craze could have envisaged the success these figures have had, with over 200 to collect and fans who will do anything to get the one they are missing from their collection. For those who have never heard of this brand or who do not see what the appeal is, these collectable figures are unbelievably funny. Featuring funny or disturbing poses, familiar scenes and even celebrities, they are a great talking point and will make people laugh whenever they see them. Some of the Bad Taste Bears that have been created include:
-
Horoscopes – figures often experiencing a mishap with their star sign symbol
-
Special Occasions – William and Kate’s wedding, moon landing
-
Celebrities – Amy Winehouse, Marilyn Monroe, David Beckham
-
Film Scenes – King Kong, The Shining, Tomb Raider
-
Seven Deadly Sins – Pride, Greed, Gluttony
-
Music Stars – Britney Spears, Madonna, Slash
With all of these humorous Bad Taste Bears on offer it’s no surprise that they have achieved the success they have. Made to the highest standards and illustrated and designed in the same way they were born, they are one of the biggest collectable figurines collections available. Even if you’ve never collected them before, everyone can relate to at least one of the BTBs and see the funny side. While some people have criticised them or they have caused controversy, they are little more than harmless fun that will make people chuckle. With a growing number of fans, there are sure to be more Bad Taste Bears in future.
