Sophie Lancaster Foundation

In 2007 the Sophie Lancaster Foundation was set up in response to the horrific death of the young girl from whom they take their name. Walking home through a park, Sophie and her partner were attacked viciously by a gang and she was to eventually die of her injuries. Her mother, Sylvia Lancaster, began the Sophie charity campaign, who refer to themselves as S.O.P.H.I.E or Stamp Out Prejudice Hatred and Intolerance Everywhere, their main cause and goal.

Our Support
Blue Banana supports the Sophie Lancaster Foundation and believes this to be an incredible cause that should be known by all those who visit our site. We are dedicated to supporting the charity in the following ways:
  • We will provide donations for the charity every time the code "Sophie" is used at the checkout,
  • We will provide items for any fundraising events that we can,
  • We will try to increase the visibility and public profile of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation.
We hope that through our support of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation, they will be able to further their charity goals and continue to promote individuality in a safe and tolerant society. The Sophie charity lists their main objectives as follows:
  1. To create a lasting legacy to Sophie.
  2. To provide educational group-works that will change the prejudice and intolerance towards people for alternative subcultures.
  3. To campaign to have the UK Hate Crime legislation extended to include people from "alternative subcultures” or "Lifestyle and Dress”.
The Sophie Lancaster Foundation has found immense support around the country and has taken great strides towards making Sophie’s name synonymous with tolerance and education. Forming a partnership with Illamasqua, a short film entitled Dark Angel was created for what would have been Sophie’s 23rd birthday. This helped push the Sophie charity campaign even further into the public domain, where the most work could be done. Since the charity was formed they have also produced a CD and creative writing book, the former featuring gothic bands (some songs written especially in response to Sophie) and the latter being the collected works of individuals who felt touched by the Sophie Lancaster Foundation and their message.

The extent of the Sophie Lancaster Foundation cannot be summarised easily. Working with local and national government to adjust the definition of a hate crime has already produced a far greater awareness for the difficulties that young people in sub cultures face every day. With their aim to stamp out prejudice, the Sophie charity has created kits to give to schools and offered training into their use. This enables teachers to allow young people to recognise and evaluate their assumptions about others based on their dress. The Sophie Lancaster Foundation has already ensured that Sophie’s name will always be remembered amongst those who share her lifestyle choice and is still offering continuous support for those who wish to be different.
